Laufskálavarða

A sight of the Icelandic kind.

Laufskálavarða is located along the Route No. 1 on the south coast of Iceland. All the little turrets of rocks have been set up by travelers of many times and ages. The myth goes, that if you travel across Mýrdalssandur for the first time, you put a rock ontop of one of the cairns. If you do so, the myth guarantees you a good journey.

The myth probably stems from the fact that crossing Mýrdalssandur is a dangerous task, especially before the road was built and the bridges were created.

Do you see the glaciers and rock panorama in the back? These landscapes are so impressive that I can not stop to stop and take photos.
