The Magic Ray of Light
I was watching this awesome and wild storm from the dry safety of the Rorbuer we rented in Moskenes, Lofoten, near Eliassen Rorbuer.
When I looked over at that mountain I could sens something happening so I went out to the balcony of the house with my camera. The moment with this ray of light only lasted about a minute but it was one of those really neat features of light that you have to catch when they are happening. Just then and at no other time.

Nusfjord on Lofoten
The pictureesque village of Nusfjord, southern Lofoten, is mainly a museum and a vacation place. I really liked the view from up on the hill.

The birds on my window
The birds that come to the feeders on and near my windows entertain us well at breakfast and any other time you come to the kitchen. I am really happy that we put them up again this year!

Seljalandsfoss
A winter visit to Seljalandsfoss brought us ice coatings on everything.
Iceland is beautiful in every season as far as I can tell. I want to go on a deep winter visit one day.

The baby bird
I can't help it: The images of the baby bird are just too cute not to show you these.
They both look at me here. With those crazy eye positions.

Who's that chick?
The colony was on different times of the breeding cycle. Some birds already had chicks. Like this one. The chick was very active and wanted to take a peek out.

Portraits of Gannets
The gannets were out on the edge of the cliff and they felt safe. Despite the people there I think they know that their habitat is impossible for us to get to. One more step and you will drop by 60 meters down to the sea. So you can get pretty close to the birds.
Also we had brought our long lens.

Gannets in Flight
The gannets
were flying all around their colony. Watching them land and take off was
fabulous. Once they started, though, they flew far out to sea and
disappeared out of sight.

Cliffs on the Sea
So let's zoom in to the cliffs.
There are a large number of guillemots, flumars, gannets and seagulls nested in there. There are supposed to also be razor bills but I have to admit, I did not spot one.
The cormorants were flying down by the sea and do not use these nesting rocks.

Helgoland
A week ago we took a family trip to Helgoland out in the German North Sea.
It is a cute little island and the bird cliffs are amazing. Too bad we only had the day trip. Four and a half hours are not so much on the island. But the ride there and back was really fast and enjoyable and the trip all together was great!
Images of the birds I will show in the next few days. If you zoom in really close, you can already see them.

blue berries in the dark
I photographed the blueberries not by themselves but in a white ceramic bowl to make them stand out from the background but still keep the dark and moody image effect.
This image is lit with the same snoot as before but not with a constant light on the left but with a large white reflector. This gave me a sharper light on the right and a softer, more even light on the left.

Another fruit Image
For my contest I went through a variety of fruits and made the pomagrante a little more active by throwing the seeds down ontop of them.
The setup was about the same as for the apple image I showed yesterday. I removed the cross from the softbox and changed the position of the light a little.
Also the underground of the fruit is now a piece of background instead of the slate.

Fruit Images
For my regular photo challenge I lately had the topic of "fruit". I chose to go in the direction of dark and moody. Here is my contest image of this round.
I found this beauty in a Turkish supermarket in town, polished it up with a soft cloth and set it onto a stool ontop of a black slate platter. Then I buildt a snoot for one of my studio flashes by making a tube out of black cardboard. That is my main light from the right hand side that causes highlight and shadow on the apple.
I then set a softbox with a constant light to the camera left. I pulled two strings of cloth around the softbox, forming an X over it like a window with cross beams. That light is responsible for the catchlight on the left of the apple.
I had the black studio background pulled down and covering the floor so that there would not be light reflected around the room and that gave me the black background.
I had this image in my head, got my stuff together and made it happen. This is how I like my projects to flow.
The leaf, by the way, I stole from an apple tree in our garden and placed it where I wanted it.

Surfer's Paradise
When we spend the summer vacations on the Lofoten, we went to Unstad as well. Unstad is a surfer paradise and so we went to shoot some of the action and watching them from the beach.

Evening Light
Later that night another crew of surfers was heading out to the bay and we set out so see some more.
The sun was playing the perfect game with the waves and we bathed in golden light for a while. In strong wind, well, in storm.

Afternoon Surf
The weather was stormy and intense on the day that we spend in Unstad. The afternoon surfers were struggeling hard. But it is awesome for some cool and moody images.

Acrobatic
This is one of our squirrels. It is neclecting the squirrel house with the nuts and seeds and digging into one of the birdfeeders.
The day was wet. As you can tell.

Get right into the middle
Sticking my fisheye lens right into the middle of the field gives you a differnet view from normal, I guess.
No, I did not step into the field and I did not trample on any plants. :)

Sunset over the campground
The setting sun was lighting up the clouds above the Lofoten campground really nicely. While we kept watching out for the eagle couple that was circling the range we saw the clouds turn all sorts of sunset colours.

Winding Bridges
The bridges on the Lofoten partially look ambitious, crazy and strange. But this combination here is really twisted.
