These windows are those of a coal mine building in Germany. The HDR-work brought the reflection out nicely.

Street at night

Streets can be pretty in the night, and at the same time, not so inviting. Every time I see this photo, I remember, that we did not linger forever there. But it was fine, really. I did not remove the light color from the picture because I did like it. That is a matter of taste, though, I guess.

Flying over Iceland

As I said before I love taking pictures on daytime flights, especially after starting and before landing. Here are some more pictures of Iceland from above. I hope you love the landscape as much as we do.

Berlin at night

I had a nicely long blue hour in Berlin on midsummer night. This picture I took at the beginning of the nicest time on Potsdammer Platz.

Ich hatte in der Mittsommernacht eine sehr lange blaue Stunde. Dieses Bild habe ich am Anfang der blauen Stunde am Potsdammer Platz aufgenommen.

Brandenburger Tor

This side view of the Brandenburg Gates in Berlin I took on midsummer night with beautyful blue hour lighting. The angle I chose is a bit unusual but it made the hight show up and anyone has allready seen the front and backside too many times, right? No? Well, I did take pictures from other sides, too.

Diese Sicht auf das Brandenburger Tor habe ich in der Mittsommernacht fotografiert, während der blauen Stunde, die mehr als eine Stunde dauerte. Ein wenig ungewöhnlich im Winkel, aber dadurch kam die Höhe schön zur Geltung. Bilder von der Vorder- und Rückseite, die ohnehin schon jeder kennt, habe ich auch fotografiert. Die Bilder zeige ich dann bald.

 

little critter

This little guy was roaming the tropical hall at the zoo, ZOOM, Gelsenkirchen, Germany. He does not live in a cage or designated area but "wild" in the hall. A guide from the zoo showed him to us and he was proudly showing his size.

Dieser kleine Kerl lebt im Zoo halbwegs frei, ZOOM, Gelsenkirchen. Er kann in der Tropenhalle herumklettern, wie es ihm gefällt und lebt nicht in einem Käfig oder abgesperrten Bereich. Ein Zoowärter hat uns auf ihn aufmerksam gemacht und er stand stolz Modell.

 

Berlin Government district

The government district in Berlin is light up at night and therefore lends itself to HDR photography.

Here is the side of the house of representatives. I wish politics were as see-through as these buildings!

Das Regierungsviertel in Berlin ist nachts interessant beleuchtet. Daher bietet es sich für HDR-Aufnahmen an.

Dies hier ist die Seite des Abgeordnetenhauses. Ich wünschte, Politik wäre so durchsichtig wie diese Gebäude!

The Berlin Dome - inside

I went into the Berlin Dome today. This HDR is one of the shots I took. Unfortunately I was told after a few minutes that tripods were not allowed. I got some picutres taken before that happend so I can show what I made. The HDR is a 3 shot auto bracketing work, processed in Dynamic Photo HDR.

Ich war heute im Berliner Dom. Dieses HDR ist eins der Bilder, die ich dort gemacht habe. Leider erzählte man mir nach ein paar Minuten, dass Stative nicht erlaubt waren. Hier ist aber jedenfalls eines der Bilder, das ich bis dahin machen konnte. Die Aufnahme besteht aus 3 Bildern einer automatischen Belichtungsreihe, entwickelt mit Dynamic Photo HDR.

I admit: More may be possible in the development and tonemapping, but I only have a little netbook here and can not really get all the details out. I may publish this HDR again at a later point after more work.

Forgotten

The Dogde left in the New Hampshire woods is worth more than one photo. Here is the interior in HDR (single exposure).

More Kavadi Dancers

Hiking in the Westfjords

We went to Hornstrandir two years ago and went to cross over to the next bay. We missed a tiny hint along the way and ended ourselves in a pretty dead end. It was pretty much a dead end - with some funny events going on while figuring out what had gone wrong and if and how to change that, between us and two Icelandic couples ending in the same spot for a while.

The benefit of this trip and adventure was the unspoiled view of these bird rocks and this picture (and many more).

2009 waren wir in Hornstrandir in den Westfjorden. Bei unserer Wanderung von Hornvík in die nächste Bucht haben wir einen Moment lang unseren Weg verloren. Während wir - und zwei isländische Paare, die mit uns in der Sackgasse landen - versuchen, herauszufinden, und wo und ob es weitergeht, habe ich unter vielen anderen diese Aufnahme von den Vogelfelsen gemacht.

Flower in HDR

In April we went to Keukenhof in the Netherlands. If there is a place to die of tulip overdose, it is there. It was astonishingly pretty to look at. But the time that I was able to take it was limited.

This post will show another picutre of the trip. This time it will be single exposure HDR pictures frome one RAW file since the sunlight made the flowers shine nicely.

 

Im April waren wir im Keukenhof in den Niederlanden. Wenn es einen Ort gibt, an dem man an Tulpenüberdosis sterben kann, dann dort. Es war aber überraschend hübsch gemacht. Die Zeit, die ich da verbringen konnte, war aber begrenzt.

In diesem Post zeige ich nochmal ein Tulpenbild, diesmal als HDR-Aufnahmen aus einer RAW-Datei, weil die Sonne die Blumen zum Strahlen gebracht hat.

The Temple Priest

At the Temple Festival at the Hindu Temple in Hamm, Germany, we saw the procession of the big shrine. Up in the shrine the Temple Priest was riding along.

Wir haben die Prozession beim Hindu-Tempel beobachtet. In dem großen Schrein, der vorbeizog, saß der Tempelpriester.

Icebear at ZOOM

We went to the zoo lately, ZOOM Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

This icebear is a smaller female that has some growing issues. She therefore lives alone.

She seems to be a rather playful and chilled bear. Still I would not want to meet her in the wild.

Wir waren neulich im ZOOM, Gelsenkirchen. Diese Eisbärin hat Wachstumsprobleme und ist daher kleiner als andere Bären. Sie lebt deshalb allein.

Sie scheint sehr ruhig und verspielt zu sein. Aber auch diese Bärin würde ich nicht gern in freier Wildbahn treffen.

Kavadi dance

The Temple Celebration at the Hindu-Temple in Hamm was colorful, bright, foreign and spectacular. We went to see it on June 12th, 2011.


When we arrived, this dance was going on in the street and we watched for a while.


The dance is called Kavadi. It is a ritual dance entrancing the dancers. Through online research I found out some about it. Here is a great explanatory interview someone did with a Kavadi dancer that may help to understand more: Interview with a Kavadi bearer.

The dancers are barefoot, carrying these yokes on their shoulders. And in their backs there were hooks that reminded of big or small fishing hooks that were pierced through their skin and flesh. Lines were attached to their hooks and a dancer behind them was pulling those lines frantically during the dance. The pulling on the skin looked horrifying. But it was also spectacular to see.

They also had a three ended piece of silver in their mouth, the sides pierced through their cheeks, the middle poking out of their mouth.

Das Tempel Fest des Hindu-Tempels in Hamm war bunt, laut, vielfältig und fremd. Wir waren am 12.06.2011 dort. Als wir ankamen, war die Kreuzung voller Kavadi-Tänzer.

Die Tänzer waren barfuß und trugen jeweils ein geschmücktes Joch auf den Schultern. In ihren Rücken waren Haken, die wie große oder kleine Angelhaken aussahen, durch die Haut gestochen. Daran waren Seile befestigt, die zusammenliefen und von einem zweiten Tänzer gehalten wurden. Beim Tanzen lehnte sich der Tänzer mit dem Joch mit Elan in das Seil und die Haut zog mit den Haken weit vom Körper. Der hintere Tänzer zog fest an den Seilen und ließ die Haken unter Spannung.

Die Tänzer hatten auch die Münder durchstochen. Dreiteilige Silberschmuckstücke waren neben den Mundwinkeln durch die Wangen gestochen und ragten auf beiden Seiten und auch zwischen den Lippen heraus.

Die Tänzer befinden sich in einer Trance und spüren ganz offenbar keine Schmerzen.

Eine Gruppe Musiker mit Blasinstrumenten und Trommeln gibt den Rhytmus vor.

For my contest Canonfreaks vs. Nikonjunkies, I had to hand in a picture on the topic of "dominant color". This is the motive I took. For this posting here I slightly worked on the picture, whitening the background out a bit more than I was allowed to do for the contest. The contest demands photography, not showing modified or manipulated picture. The work was small, though. So maybe it would have been possible.

Für den Contest der Canonfreaks vs. Nikonjunkies musste ich das Thema "dominante Farbe" bedienen. Dies ist das Motiv, das ich abgelichtet habe. Für dieses Posting hier habe ich das Bild noch ein wenig bearbeitet, insbesondere den Hintergrund weißer ausbelichtet. Das habe ich für den Wettbewerb für zuviel Bearbeitung gehalten. Dort sind nur Aufnahmen, nicht aber stärkere Bearbeitungen, etc. erlaubt. Die Änderungen waren jetzt aber so gering, dass ich sie vielleicht doch hätte durchführen können.

The Dodge

The dodge in the forrest made me take more than one HDR. This one here came out nicely because the sun hit the car just right. This car has been sitting in the woods of New Hampshire for quite a while.

Der Dodge im Wald hat mich zu mehr als einer HDR-Aufnahme veranlasst. Diese hier ist mit dem Sonnenlicht auf dem Wagen wirklich gut geworden. Dieses Auto steht schon lange in New Hampshire im Wald.

The Parade at the Temple Celebration

The Temple Celebration at the Hindu Temple in Hamm, Germany (no joke!) left me with way more pictures than I could imagine. I will therefore show more pictures of this celebration right in the next posting. I know I usually do not do that. But here are pictures of the parade of the shrine.

The big shrine is devoted to the godess Sri Kamadchi Ampal and is made in India. It is decorated elaborately and as you can see, is very large. It is pulled along the roads by a large amount of people that hold the ropes attached to the front.

The shrine was preceded by a smaller cart with a hippo and flower decoration. I do not want to claim any knowledge about these traditions because they are not my own and I have not had any previous contact with this. Please research for yourself if you want to know more - and if you do, post your knowledge or your sources underneath for others to get information! I, myself, would like to know more and will surely go into more detail with this.

The temple, I found out, is built according to southern Indian style. This temple is the second largest Hindu Temple in Europe. The largest one must be in London, England. Since the one in London is built in a different way, this temple in Hamm is the largest in Dravida-Style. This building was constructed in 2002 while there were previous temple places before sind about 1989.

Die Tempel Feierlichkeiten des Hindu Tempels in Hamm haben mir so viele Aufnahmen beschert, wie ich nicht erwartet hätte. Ich poste daher zwei Mal hintereinander darüber.

Hier sind die Bilder der Parade und des Schreins, der jährlichen Ausfahrt der Göttin um den Tempel.

Der Schrein ist in Indien hergestellt und prachtvoll dekoriert. Er wird von einer großen Menge Menschen an den vorn angebrachten Seilen gezogen. Ihm voraus geht ein kleinerer Wagen mit einem Nilpferd und Blumen.

Ich möchte gar nicht behaupten, viel über diese Traditionen und Bräuche zu wissen. Ich hoffe, Ihr findet Informationen auch selbst. Hier jedenfalls ist die Wikipedia-Seite über den Tempel, die schon einige Informationen enthält. Wer mehr darüber weiß, kann gern sein Wissen oder seine Quellen posten.

Der in 2002 gebaute Tempel ist der zweitgrößte Hindu-Tempel in Europa, nach London. Er ist der größte im südindischen Stil erbaute Tempel.

I have posted pictures of the Hindu Temple in Hamm before. Today was one of the days of the temple festivities to honor the godess Sri Kamadchi Ampal. The official temple website tells way more about this festival and the background than I could ever do so I just give you the link to Kamadchi Ampal.

I will prepare pictures of todays excursion to the festival by and by but here is a fist single-exposure HDR of the dance we saw when we arrived.

I will post more pictures in the next few days. I promise!

Ich habe früher schon einmal Bilder des Hindu-Tempels veröffentlicht. Heute ist einer der Tage des Tempelfests zu Ehren der Göttin Sri Kamadchi Ampal.

Die offizielle Website Tempels weiß viel mehr darüber, als ich es je wissen werde. Daher hier der Link. 

Ich werde viele weitere Bilder der Feierlichkeiten von heute aufbereiten und posten. Das verspreche ich. Hier aber schon mal ein Vorgeschmack.

Die Aufnahme ist eine HDR-Bearbeitung aus einer RAW-Datei. Die Tänzer standen natürlich nie lange genug still, um mehrere Aufnahmen vom gleichen Motiv zu machen.
