PAPERminis

I came up with a series of images called the PAPERminis.

Basically I am painting, sketching or scribbeling a scene and objects and people in H0 scale inhabit this world. H0 is a scale of 1:87, that is one of the standart model train sizes.

Most of my sketches are unfinished by look and style and I have no problem showing the edges of the paper sticking in the images.

To make the challenge nicer to myself, I am including lots of techniques from pencil over color pencil, aquarell colors, guache, chalks, willow charcoal, oil pastells, and such. Mostly I am sketching on papers of different qualities and styles.

My papers may lay flat, they may bend, they often are folded - once or several times - at the time I take the photograph. My sketching methods are partially simple perspectives, partially sketches in more than one plain of paper and some sketches in anamorphic style to create the right look.

This fun project is going live on www.ctl2013.de - the blog of Come To Life 2013 where I was part of a 52-week challenge project in 2013. Other images in H0 are presented by my team mates there.

PAPERminis No.1: you crack me up

My H0-images will be presented under the title "PAPERminis". The backgrounds/"undergrounds"/"worlds" are sketched and painted. The figures therefore play the lead roll in a world made of paper.

My materials will differ and I will work in color as well as in monochrome.

I have pre-worked a little and created a series of sketches and images that I will fill with life by and by now and bring to you.

PAPERminis No. 2: Construction time

The construction of a diner. A story begins.

Die Erbauung des Diners. Eine Geschichte beginnt.

PAPERminis No. 3: Boat ride

There will be time until summer. Most sailboats are still safely put away, as are the bikinis and swim shorts. But let me invite you to a virtual boat ride.

PAPERminis No. 4: The Boat Ride goes on

The boat ride around the swimming dock inspired more images.

PAPERminis No. 5: The broken dock

The PAPERmini world takes you on another excursion. Unfortunately the dock is broken. Good that some of the guys get there for repairs.

Pencil on folded paper.

PAPERminis No.6: The Diner is open

Do you remember the construction of the diner? PAPERminis No. 2: Construction Time
The diner now is ready to open and host its patrons.

Erinnert Ihr Euch an den Bau des Diners? PAPERminis No. 2: Construction Time

PAPERminis No. 7: We repair the pool

Die PAPERminis machen ihre Welt sommerfein. Da kommt so einiges zusammen.

The PAPERminis are preparing their world summer-ready. There is a lot to do. Today they renovate the pool and are working together really well.

PAPERminis No.8: Start of the Season

The PAPERminis take a first excursion out into the world in spring. Come with them on a little canoe trip.

The sailors come across the second sailboat. No one is in that boat, but astonishingly it looks just like the first boat.

Pencil on paper, anamorphic drawing Die Segler kommen an einem zweitem Segelboot vorbei.

Anamorphische Zeichnung.

The boat in the last image

PAPERminis No 9: The second boat

was sketched in anamorphic style, which means that the actual sketch is majorly contorted. From one special angle the image looks like a 3D object and is perfectly shaped. But from all other angles the image looks terribly off. Here is how it looks.

Das Boot aus dem letzten Bild

PAPERminis No 9: The second boat

The PAPERminis tourist in Tuscany.
Penicl on drawingpaper. Der PAPERminis Tourist in der Toskana. Bleistift auf Zeichenpapier.

The Tourist is still traveling around. Today he is checking out Sintra in Portugal. The image was losely inspired by the memory of this photograph by me: Sintra in the Sun. Oil pastells on paper.

PAPERminis No. 12: It's Pool Time!

It's pool time, everybody! We are all there already. Jump right in! Pencil on paper. Es ist Pool Time, Leute! Wir sind schon alle da. Springt einfach rein! Bleistift auf Papier.

PAPERminis No. 13: Above and Below

In PAPERmini-Land things are above and below. Good that in the end, everybody stays on track. Pencil on folded paper.

PAPERminis No. 14: Thousand and One Nights

In the mystic world of 1001 Nights the tourist stands, marveling the scenery. Pencil on folded paper.

PAPERminis No. 15: Window Shopping

As evening falls in town the lights come on and the last few people go home.
Guache on paper.

PAPERminis No. 16: Spring Time

It is spring time and the trees are in full bloom. The farmers are getting the fields ready so you find some tools out there, too. Pencil on folded paper.

PAPERminis No. 17: Construction Site

Even the biggest building is started from the ground up. These busy guys are working on getting it set up. Ink on folded paper.

PAPERminis No. 18: Who's riding through the night?

Who's riding through the night? This image of the PAPERminis is created with willow charcoal on sketching paper. The photo is lit with a flash light.

PAPERminis No. 19: Trainride

I am almost positive that the train is approaching from the back. People in the station are waiting for a while, I guess.

... to be continued
