Tourist Stuff

You visit a site like Mont St. Michel... and you expect touristy stuff to be there. But then the shops still shock you, slightly, with relatively unrelated stuff. Like these handbag things.

The Elevator

An image of an elevator? Well, yes. This is a historic elevator system, that used man power to draw the sled up. The sled is that thing hanging on the wall there. It was riding up rails that were steeply built into the wall of the castle, up the mountain.

To operate the elevator, a monk was running or walking in that gigantic hamster wheel and spooled up the rope.

The hall of columns

The hall of the gigantic columns in the abbey is very impressive. It almost feels as if the columns take up more space in the room than the air.

Columns

These columns are used to support the structure above it. But really... they look cool just by themselves.

Monks' Hall

This is the former dining hall of the abbey ontop of Mont St. Michel.

Where the steps go up in the back right there is a sitting stool in the wall. One monk used to sit up there during the meals and read religious texts to the eating monks.

View from the top

Inside the monestary on Mont St. Michel. The view down this rail in the front it actually historic. A tilted elevator was running up here to transport goods to the monestary.
