signs to no where

When you hike and camp in the middle of no where you do not really expect signs to lead the way. Especially you do not expect them to point to things in other fjords. And you do not really know what you should do with this one. You will not really find much of a path. Well, nice of someone to point to things, isn't it?

IT

This is IT, right? Well, red enough it is.

In fact this is the ceiling of an airport terminal and of course you are guessing right: EXIT was hidden here.

This is IT, oder? Naja, rot genug ist es. Tatsächlich ist das die Decke eines Airport Terminals und dahinter versteckt sich ein EXIT.

Serles

Serles is a mountain near Innsbruck, Austria. This photo is an image, zoomed in pretty far from the opposite side hill within the Alpenzoo.

The wale sceleton at the New England Aquarium really shows the size of those animals.

Turtle

In Boston this winter we went to the New England Aquarium. This gigant sea turtle lives in the big tank there and seems to have a good life. As far as I remember the story this turtle was rescued when it was injured and stayed.

Raven

When taking a weekend trip to Austria, we went to the Alpenzoo in Innsbruck. That zoo has a selection of animals that can be found in the wild around the alps.

General Store

In Harrisville, NH, we had lunch at the general store. It looks just like you would want a general store to look like.

In Harrisville, New Hampshire, haben wir im General Store Mittag gegessen. Es sieht dort genauso aus, wie es in einem General Store aussehen sollte.

jellyfish

Keeping jellyfish in aquariums is a tough challenge as I learned a few years ago. They need constant flow of water since that is what they move through. And it is important that they keep moving constantly for their metabolism. At the same time a tank must not have corners because they get themselves into those corners and crush to death.

The New England Aquarium in Boston has jellyfish in a tank that is specifically designed for them. They are quite the show, I think.

Quallen sind in Aquarien schwer zu halten, habe ich vor ein paar Jahren gelernt. Sie brauchen konstanten Wasserdurchlauf, weil sie sich dadurch hindurch bewegen. Außerdem ist das wichtig für ihren Stoffwechsel. Gleichzeitig darf das Aquarium keine Ecken haben, weil die Quallen sich dort hineinmanövrieren und sich selbst darin zu Tode quetschen.

Das New England Aquarium in Boston hat Quallen in einem Spezialbecken.

night glow balloons

A few days ago I told you about the Night Glow event at Warstein. Of course I did not only take photos of the little Yedi. Here are some of the baloons. I liked the silhouettes against the light up background.

Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich vom Night Glow Event in Warstein berichtet. Natürlich habe ich nich nur Bilder von dem kleinen Jedi gemacht. Hier sind Bilder der Ballons. Ich habe die Silhouetten entdeckt, die sich vor dem beleuchteten Hintergrund schön abhoben.

Concert Photography

In December 2009 we went to the NiX Blues Club in the Netherlands to see a concert by Jason Ricci and New Blood. It is a small locally run blues club. By weird coincidence we ended up on a table near the stage in that bar. And that table was usually taken up by a local couple. We shared the space with them and started to chat. It turned out, he was a photographer. I had not taken my camera to the club because I wasn't sure about the location, the option to keep my gear safe and the possibility to shoot.

He, though, was equipped with two camera bodies and a big supply of lenses. He was working with Nikons. One of them he handed to me and asked me to take the pics with the close range lense.

Well, how is that for a challenge? A camera you don't know, handed to you in the dark, no light up display and no flash light. And a concert rolling just meters before you. I did not do too badly, I guess.

Jason Ricci approves of photo and sound recording in his concerts so I can feel free to publish my results here.

Potsdamer Platz

I get to stay in Berlin every once in a while for private or job reasons. Sometimes I can use those stays to explore the town by camera.

Ich komme immer mal wieder nach Berlin, entweder aus privaten oder beruflichen Gründen. Manchmal kann ich diese Besuche nutzen, um die Stadt mit der Kamera zu betrachten.

On the search for interesting clouds for the contest I came by these girls in the field. This is a good example of how the landscape looks around the area we live in.

Auf der Suche nach interessanten Wolken für den Contest kam ich an diesen Damen hier vorbei. Dieses Bild ist ein gutes Beispiel für die Landschaft in unserer Gegend.

On the contest I was looking for spectacular clouds. You may have read about it before on this blog. These ones I did find the first day I was out shooting. In black and white they look even more dooming than in color.

Für den Contest habe ich nach besonderen Wolken gesucht. Darüber habt Ihr hier ja schon gelesen. Diese hier habe ich am ersten Tag des Contest gefunden. In Schwarz-Weiß sehen sie noch bedrohlicher aus, als in Farbe.

I was hunting doors for the canon vs nikon contest in April 2009 and was trying to find one that is spectacular enough to run in a contest. This one did not make the final choice but it is still a nice one, right?

Ich habe im April 2009 für den canon vs. nikon Wettbewerb Türen gejagt, auf der Suche nach einer Tür, die besonders spektakulär war. Diese hier hat nicht die finale Auswahl bestimmt, aber sie ist immer noch hübsch anzusehen, oder?

Yedi at practice

This summer we visited the Night Glow at Warstein, organized by the Warstein Brewery. Hot air baloons in a lot of different shapes, sizes and colors, are on display there and play up for this night event with music and lighting according to the tune that plays. These photos I took alongside the event and really liked the little yedi. Actually I got to talk to him and his mother so I did email him the photos a day or two after the event.

In diesem Sommer waren wir beim Night Glow in Warstein, organisiert von der Warsteiner Brauerei. Heißluftbaloons in allen Formen, Farben und Größen werden zur Schau gestellt und im Rhythmus zur Musik beleuchtet. Am Rande dieses Events habe ich diese Bilder eines kleinen Jedi gemacht. Ich bin sogar mit ihm und seiner Mutter ins Gespräch gekommen und habe ihm die Bilder ein oder zwei Tage nach der Veranstaltung gemailt.

Writing No 1

For my photo contest I was working on the topic of "writing" and I used some old books - mostly from the 1940th - for my photos.

I will start entering some of those into the blog here.

Für meinen Photocontest habe ich neulich am Thema "Schrift" gearbeitet und habe dafür ein paar alte Bücher benutzt - die meisten aus den 1940ern.

Hornvík, isländische Westfjorde, August 2011. Neben den beiden Sommerhäusern habe ich diese Socken auf der Wäscheleine entdeckt.

This Cliff out in Hornvík, Icelandic Westfjords, looks different in every light. The surface of the ocean is being whipped up by wind and therefore has that steaming look to it, right there at the outer tip. 

Diese Kliffseite in Hornvík in den isländischen Westfjorden sieht in jedem Licht anderes aus. Die Meeresoberfläche wird durch den Wind aufgewirbelt und hat deshalb diese dampfende Erscheinung.

In Iceland this summer we encountered several groups herding horses down the roads. This one group we got good pictures of. They were traveling along the south coast of Iceland.

Diesen Sommer in Island haben wir verschiedene Gruppen gesehen, die Pferde die Straße entlang getrieben haben. Von dieser Gruppe haben wir gute Bilder mitgebracht. Sie waren an der Südküste unterwegs.

This piece of ice from Jökulsárlón was held by our guide on the boat and the light was reflecting in it really pretty.

Have you seen northern lights?

... To answer the question: No, I have not yet. But his video I found online is just beautiful footage.

So once again I am presenting another net-find. This is from Finnland from the year 2011.

I really hope to go and see northern lights one of these years.

Fire Fish

Going to the New England Aquarium I got my camera pretty well adjusted to the low light settings. This fire fish cought my attention and with some patience he posed for me as well.
