Simply add...

"Simply add boiling water"

New York Photography 1890-1950

white flowers - and horses, too

This is a photo as Iceland presents it. All the layers and views of landscape. This dominance of lush vegitation that the horses thrive in, makes the views all the better.

Nesting Penguin

In the Ocenario in Lisbon, Portugal, we did get to meet a group of penguins.

They seemed to enjoy themselves despite the zoo situation. One bit of proof that they are doing ok, I think, is the fact that several young ones are born every year.

The high light for me was not the sun bathing of the penguin up top. On the side of the viewing platform but well out of reach we saw this penguin nesting and sitting on an egg.

Magic summer

This is Lisbon in April. The sun came out and was glaring down the small alleys in the older parts of Lisbon.

This is an HDR of 3 exposures.

Travelers

We saw this family traveling along a country side road in Portugal, April 2012.
One day later we saw them again, a tent sitting on the side of the road in the early morning and the horses grazing next to the rail road tracks.

Azuleja Church

The church next to the Diana Temple in Évora, Portugal, had the most impressive interior decoration of azulejas we found on our trip. The tile illustrations were telling stories in great detail.

Schwarz-Weiß-Klassiker in Hamburg

To all my English readers:
This is an article about an art exhibit in Germany featuring photography artist from 1890 to 1950 mainly based in New York City. I recommend following the link named "black and white classics" further down in the posting. There you will find a selection of works of these artists. Not all the photos were from the exhibit and the exhibit had way more photographers and photos in the actual halls of the museum. But you get an impression nonetheless.

New York Photography 1890-1950

A few dayys ago I wrote about the Horizon Field installation in Hamburg, Deichtorhallen.

Pousada Dos Loios

On our trip around Portugal we spent one night at the Pousada Dos Loios in Évora.

We had seen photos of it, but the abbey, turned into a hotel, was better than you can imagine. It is really worth spending a day or two there.

Right infront of the Pousada you stumble upon the Diana Temple, a Roman ruin ontop of the hill.

The restaurant next to the Pousada had a nice buffet. I do not know if a human has to eat pigs ears, but I did eat them and they were actually pleasant. They were in a pickeling brine and presented as a salat.

Manueline Details

These details of buildings are all from the Hieronimus Abbey in Bélem, just outside Lisbon in Portugal.

This style of building is called manueline - which is a late gothic, very overdone decoration. More about manueline buildings you find on wikipedia, of couse.

A cat in the street in Portugal. It was lingering for a while, looking very relaxed, then walked away.

long, long legs

I really wonder how you can walk with those shoes and heels on the wet sandy beach. Well, I saw the shoes when you had done that and I would have not been happy about their state.

Capela dos Ossos

These are impressions of the Capela dos Ossos in Évora. This chapel was clad entirely in human bones, including the skulls. The scenery is somewhat surreal. On the other hand those days this was not an outrageous thing to do. The relation to death and dead people was different then.

The chapel is part of Igreja de São Francisco in Évora.

The most shocking experience in this chapel is that you keep seeing things you did not expect. The entire person on the wall is impressive. It took me a while to find out that there is a child hanging next to the grown up.

500px

I lately opened an account for 500px. If you are in that site, too, maybe you want to check it out?

I started out filling my album with street and people photography. I will probably enter other topics there, too. But I thought, I start out with a bit of just one subject.

New York individuals

Check out these two men in NYC this winter. Each is note worthy, together they are quite the show.

Reflection and Swinging

In 2 previous posts I reported about Horizon Field Hamburg by Antony Gormley.

Here are a few more impressions from that location.

People walking ever which direction and standing, reflecting, looking and hanging out.

Reflections entice a lot of photographers. Good. If they make their model stand still or lay down, they both are a good target.

If enough people move synchronised enough  or solidly enough the platform beginns to swing. Uneven alliances build and some actions are way more effective than others but it really makes people pay attention and is fun for everyone.

Children seemed to have most fun of all, just using the large, reflective and smooth surface for all the entertainment they could get out of it.

A rocking line of people on the far end. It reminds me of a midsummer dance.

Miniature

Everybody does the miniaturization effect these days... cities look like toy towns all over the place. When it is well done, this makes a cool effect. But mostly it is just overdone photoshopping.

I gave miniature photography a little try here. But you see what is differnet about this.

The Eagle and the Pidgeon

This pigeon will never know who it is hanging out with, right? It is a close catch for the doube headed beast, I guess.

Horizon Field Hamburg 2

More photos of Antony Gormley's Horzion Field Hamburg. My previos post about this gives the original link and details.

I just heard that they now do night openings. That may be a nice view.

I can not quite decide what temperature of light is fitting. Can you help me find out and leave a comment?
