Venice impressions

In Venice, a lot of impressions add to the full picture. This lantern cought my eye. I do not know the purpose of the lantern. But it might be a signal for boat travel? 

In Venedig tragen viele Eindrücke zum Gesamtbild bei. Diese Laterne fiel mir auf. Ich weiß nicht, welchem Zweck sie diente, aber sie könnte für Bootsverkehr gedacht sein?

This poster was in a window in London we came by. I thought, this kind of social add was worthy to show.

Dieses Poster haben wir in einem Fenster in London entdeckt. Ich fand die Botschaft interessant und habe das Bild hierher mitgebracht. (Der Text lautet: "Eine Waffe zu tragen, kann Dich an die coolsten Orte bringen.")

Puffins

In Iceland we met puffins. They are really cute. And before you ask: No, they are not penguins in any way. But they are some of the cutest and most personal birds we ever met.

These guys we met at Látrabjarg which I posted about earlier.

In Island haben wir Puffins getroffen, Papageientaucher. Die sind wirklich süß. Und bevor Ihr fragt: Nein, sie sind nicht einmal entfernt verwandt mit Pinguinen. Sie sind aber die wohl süßesten Vögel, die wir je getroffen haben, und sie haben Persönlichkeit.

Diese Kandidaten haben wir am Látrabjarg getroffen, zu dem ich neulich bereit gepostet habe.

Streets and canals in Venice are tight and interesting - mostly. We liked the overall picture and here is some details.

Die Straßen und Kanäle von Venedig sind eng und interessant - meist. Das Gesamtbild gefiel uns. Hier sind ein paar Details.

These giraffes stand infront of a cinema in Edinburgh, Scotland. I liked the contrasts, this picture showed.

Diese Giraffen stehen vor einem Kino in Edinburgh, Schottland. Die Konstraste haben wir gefallen.

red coat

A strange view in downtown Tübingen last week: A red coat on a stand under some trees above the river. I liked the scene.

Eine seltsame Erscheinung in Tübigen, knapp über dem Fluss. Den roten Mantel musste ich mitbringen, als Foto.

Bad weather can still make good pictures.

At this place we found a spontaneous room for a night and it turned out to be a fabulous little appartment in a traditionally built house with reed roof.

Arctic Photo

Hi!

it is time to link to other photos than just my own. When in Reykjavík I always make sure to drop into the shop of Arctic Photo at Laugarvegur and a few times I got to chat with the owner and photographer and lately his wife. Aside from the fact that they are both very nice the photography is absolutely beautiful. They sell their photos and I have to say the prices are well worth it.

Ich fand es an der Zeit, auch andere Bilder als meine eigenen zu verlinken. Wenn wir nach Reykjavík kommen, schaue ich immer bei Arctic Photo im Laugarvegur vorbei. Ein paar Mal habe ich mich schon sehr nett mit dem Inhaber und Fotographen und mit seiner Frau unterhalten. Abgesehen davon, dass sie sehr nett sind, machen sie tolle Photos. Die Fotos werden meiner Meinung nach zu sehr vernünftigen Preisen verkauft.

Medusa

Venice is full of masks and weird pieces of art. Medusa cought my eye in a window display and I want to give her a special place here for everyone to see.

In Venedig findet man überall seltsame Masken und Kunstgegenstände. Hier ist Medusa in einem Schaufenster. Ihr wollte ich einen besonderen Platz hier geben.

Light Painting

A fun photo project is light painting. You can go about it in different ways. For these pictures here I worked in a dark room with no objects visible. 

It also works well to partially illuminate objects with light. Anyways: Light painting is done by a longer exposure in a majorly dark environment and a moving source of light - in this case a small LED flash light.

The pictures were made of the contest I wrote about before: Canon vs. Nikon. The light bulb I used a my contest entry. The painter of palm tree and light bulb in this case was my husband.

Light Painting ist ein lustiges Photoprojekt, das man auf verschiedene Arten umsetzen kann. Für diese Bilder hier habe ich in einem dunklen Zimmer photografiert und keine Objekte mit einbezogen. Man kann aber auch Objekte partiell anleuchten und damit hervorheben. Jedenfalls: Light Painting wird durch Langzeitbelichtung in einer im Wesentlichen dunklen Umgebung umgesetzt. Gemalt wird mit einer Lichtquelle, die man bewegt, in diesem Fall einer kleinen Taschenlampe mit LED-Leuchte. 

Diese Bilder sind wieder einmal für den Contest entstanden, den ich schon erwähnt habe: Canon vs. Nikon. Das Bild der Glühbirne habe ich letztlich für den Contest eingereicht. Der Lichtmaler der Palme und der Glühbirne war mein Mann.

the glacier that is no more

The glacier that is no more...

we happend to be in Iceland in April 2010 when "the" volcano errupted and stalled European and American air travel.

While we were there we went to see the erruption, which then was the first, smaller erruption at Fimvörduháls. Videos and pictures of that erruption I have already posted in this blog. Search for "volcano" in the tags. It was expected then that a bigger erruption would follow and the general consent was, that the larger erruption would be the volcano to the east of Fimvörduháls.

The picture here shows the mountain to the west of Fimvörduháls (with the view southwards in this picture). The mountain is called Eyjafjalla and therefore the glacier is called Eyjafjallajökull. Well, you know the name, don't you? It turned out that the erruption to follow was that of Eyjafjallajökull and the main run of water that you got to see on all the news was that glacier tounge that you see in this picture, reaching down.

This picture, therefore, shows the last of the glaciers life in former form. It is not that the mountain disappeared, it just is that the glacier melted majorly and most likely will look different, now.

Burg Eltz

A castle in the middle of the woods and hills of Eifel, Germany. This one looks like straight from a fairy tale and maybe it is indeed.

I have been to Burg Eltz several times already and will surely dig up more pictures some day. Here is a preview and you can go and check out the website.

Eine Burg mitten in Wald und Hügeln der Eifel. es sieht aus, als käme es direkt aus einem Märchen und vielleicht ist das ja sogar so.

Greyfriars Cemetary

In Scotland we visited a few cemetaries as you can pretty much not avoid in Edinburgh, anyways. The most famous one is probably Greyfriars.Here are some pictures from that place. More will follow.

In Schottland haben wir einige Friedhöfe besucht, und das ist in Edinburgh ohnehin fast nicht vermeidbar. Der wohl bekannteste davon ist Greyfriars. Hier sind ein paar Bilder davon. Mehr werden folgen.

These pictures already show one of the determining aspects of Edinburgh: The town is so tight that the houses are right close to the actual graves. Bizarre scenes like the window behind the tomb stones.

Diese Bilder zeigen bereits einen der wichtigen Aspekte Edinburghs: Die Stadt ist so dicht gedrängt, dass die Häuser bis gerade an die Gräber heran reichen. Dadurch entstehen bizarre Bilder wie das Fenster hinter dem Grabstein.

Driving along the Rhine, Germany, near Mainz, we stopped at this boat shed.

Als wir am Rhein entlang fuhren, in der Nähe von Mainz, haben wir diesen Bootsschuppen gefunden.

Flowers across the street

I wanted to do one post a day for a while. But these flowers just made me go out and take photos before breakfast this morning. So I want to post them right away. At least as an overview for you.

Ich wollte ja eine Weile lang ein Posting pro Tag machen. Aber diese Blumen hier sind genau vor meiner Haustür und deshalb bin ich heute morgen vor dem Frühstück zum Fotografieren rausgegangen. Das möchte ich Euch schnell mal zeigen. Mehr Bilder folgen demnächst.

Germany from above

I like to take pictures out of the windows of airplanes when I travel. You get views that people normally do not get. So I take my chances.

Ich mag es, Bilder aus Flugzeugfenstern zu schießen. Man bekommt Blickwinkel, die man normalerweise nicht erreicht. Ich nutze meine Chance, wenn es geht.

Látrabjarg

Látrabjarg in northern Iceland is an enormous cliff band that birds nest in extensively.

More if my pictures of this location and the windy day we went there on will follow. For now: Do you notice how small the people are on top of the cliff edge? They are real people, I swear. This cliff is big.

Látrabjarg ist eine Felswand im Norden Islands, das über und über voll mit Vögeln ist, die dort nisten.

Ich poste bald mehr Bilder von Látrabjarg und dem windigen Tag an dem wir da waren. Für den Moment: Seht Euch die Menschen oben auf dem Fels an. Nur so als Größenvergleich.

well, he is not exactly hiding but he is moving slowly on this plant, eyeing everybody carefully.

pump it up

 

no, not a work of photoshop. We really did come by this lonely fuel pump in the middle of no where.

Route 1 around Iceland has partially been re-directed and has partially been abandoned because of it.

In some part we came by this lonely settlement. A few houses, a former car repair shop - and about a mile before the houses: This pump, remembering better days. It surely was worth to take a picture.

Nein, Photoshop habe ich nicht gebraucht, um dieses Bild zu machen. Wir sind dieser einsamen Zapfsäule mitten im Nirgendwo begegnet.

Die Route 1, die um Island herum führt, ist in Teilen umgeleitet worden und daher teils verlassen. An einer dieser Stellen kamen wir zu ein paar Häusern. Es gab ein Café (mit sehr gutem Kaffee und Kuchen) eine ehemalige Werkstatt und ca. eineinhalb Kilometer vor dieser Stelle die einsame Zapfsäule, die von vergangenen Tagen träumt.

meerkats

Animals in zoos are a captive audience, true, but they still look good in pictures - as long as you do not see the cages I am happy with the pictures. These meerkats are no exception.

Tiere im Zoo sind ein Publikum, das einem schwer abhanden kommt. Aber sie sehen auf Bildern jedenfalls solange gut aus, wie man die Gitter nicht sehen kann. Diese Erdmännchen sind da keine Ausnahme.

Icelandic waterfalls - again

 

This waterfall in southern Iceland we have been to several times. This photo was taken in winter, April 2010, and you can see the  ice on the pebbels in the front. Because it was so cold we also did not attempt to walk behind the waterfall - but you can do it when there is no ice.

Wir waren schon ein paar Mal bei diesem Wasserfall in Südisland. Dieses Photo habe ich im April 2010 gemacht. Man kann das Eis auf den Kieselsteinen sehen. Weil es so kalt war und alles vereist, haben wir es gar nicht erst versucht, hinter den Wasserfall zu gehen. Aber wenn die Bedingungen besser sind, kann man das.

Grímsvötn is a volcano in Skaftafell national park, southern Iceland. We are planning to go to this national park this summer and wanted to take a special trip to Svartifoss, a spectacular waterfall from black basalt collumns. See here.

Grímsvötn ist ein Vulkan im Skaftafell National Park in Südisland. Wir planen einen Trip in diesen National Park und wollen auch endlich den Wasserfall im Süden des Nationalparks besuchen: Svartifoss, hier zu sehen.

Peace

This is a snapshot that I took in Scotland 2009. I was looking for a motive for a photocontest. The topic was "contrast". 

I saw the pink girl being pushed towards the tank that was put up for an army recruiting event in a Scotish town we walked through. And what does she do right infornt of the tank? The peace sign? That was one lucky shot!

Diesen Schnappschuss habe ich in Schottland 2009 gemacht. Ich war auf der Suche nach einem Bild für einen Photocontest mit dem Thema "Kontrast".

Ich sah, wie das Mädchen in Pink auf den Panzer zugeschoben wurde, der für eine Armeerekrutierungsaktion aufgebaut war. Und was macht sie, als sie genau vor dem Panzer ist? Das Peace-Zeichen? Da habe ich wohl Glück gehabt.

The monthly photocontest on psd-tutorials by the name of Canonfreaks vs. Nikonjunkies keeps me busy on exploring new topics and ideas.

Last month my topic was "Besteck" - "Cutlery".

And then you are on your own to find out just how boring your own cultery is in photo terms. The resulting entry into the contest was this picture here:

Ich bin seit einiger Zeit Teil des Foto-Contest "Canonfreaks gegen Nikonjunkies", den wir bei psd-tutorials.de organisieren. Kurz: "Canon vs. Nikon" oder "C vs N"

Die Themen suchen wir uns gemeinsam, die Team bestehen aus den Canonfreaks einerseits und den Nikonjunkies andererseits. Je ein Fotograf jedes Teams für jedes Thema.

Für dieses Bild lautete das Thema "Besteck" - und ich habe meine Punkte nach Hause geholt.

Das Motiv: Blaue Plastikgabeln auf einer Milchglasplatte mit Baustrahlern von unten ausgeleuchtet, mit Überbelichtung fotografiert.

Halgrimskirkja, Reykjavík

Halgrimskirkja, on one of the highest points of Reykjavík, is a strange but pretty church of its very own type.

From the tower we had a great view of town.

Die Halgrimskirkja, die auf einem der höchsten Punkte in Reykjavík steht, ist eine hübsche und sehr eigene Kirche. Von dort aus hatten wir eine gute Aussicht über die Stadt.
